The Story Behind the Portrait of Sigismondo Malatesta Print by Della Francesca
Painted around 1451, this portrait depicts Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta who was an Italian nobleman, widely regarded as one of the most daring Italian military leaders of his day. As a patron of the arts, he commissioned artists of his day including Piero Della Francesca, who also painted frescos in Sigismondo’s unfinished cathedral, the Tempio Malatestiano. Although some doubt the attribution of the original painting of the Portrait of Sigismondo art print, French art historians unanimously agreed and it is currently displayed in the Louvre.
