The Story Behind these Della Francesca Prints
Della Francesca (c.1415-1492) was an Italian painter during the Early Renaissance period. Originally from Tuscany, he lived in various towns throughout central Italy. The rolling hills of Sansepolcro are visible in pieces such as Baptism of Christ and The Nativity.
There are limited records from his early life and training. In 1439, he was recorded in Florence with Domenico Veneziano who most likely influenced him to play with dimensions, depth, and geometrical lines.
As can be seen throughout these Della Francesca prints, he used a cool colour palette, and his style is refined and meditative. In addition to being an artist, Della Francesca was also a mathematical theorist which is clearly expressed through his layers of accurate perspective, angles, and proportions. He received commissions from numerous powerful patrons, including Pope Nicholas V.
