The Story Behind the Diptych of Federico & Battista Print by Della Francesca
Painted around 1473 to 1475, this diptych of Federico and Battista print by Della Francesca is one of the most highly regarded portraits of the Italian Renaissance, showing the Duke and his wife against the backdrop of the area they ruled. Displaying the subjects in profile was a common style of the time and was inspired by ancient coins. Often mistitled The Duke and Duchess of Urbino, Montefeltro’s wife Battista, unfortunately, died before her husband ever attained the title of Duke, so never became a Duchess. It is thought that Battista’s pale appearance may allude to her early death in 1472. The original of this diptych of Federico and Battista print is currently displayed at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.Product Details
