The Story Behind the Mona Lisa Print by Da Vinci
Originally painted around 1503 to 1504, the Mona Lisa print is undoubtedly considered a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance. Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting of the Mona Lisa and her enigmatic expression is one of the most well-known paintings the world over. The work is a portrait of Italian noblewoman Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, painted in oil on a white Lombardy poplar panel. It is thought that Leonardo continued working on the Mona Lisa as late as 1517. The Mona Lisa print was acquired by King Francis I of France and has been on permanent display at the Louvre in Paris since 1797.
