The Night Watch Print by Rembrandt
Painted by the Dutch artist Rembrandt in 1642, The Night Watch art print is Rembrandt's most famous and largest painting at 363 cm by 437 cm (12 ft by 14.5 ft). It depicts Amsterdam's civic guard using dramatic light and shadow or tenebrism to create intense illumination. Portraying almost life-size figures, The Night Watch art print was commissioned by Captain Banninck Cocq for one of the headquarters of Amsterdam's civic guard. The painting was one of a series of seven similar militiamen paintings from various artists. In 1715, the painting was moved to the Amsterdam Town Hall and trimmed on all four sides. These missing portions have never been found. The Night Watch art print is one of the most famous Dutch Golden Age paintings and is prominently displayed in the ‘Night Watch Gallery’ in the Rijksmuseum.
