The Story Behind La Fornarina Print by Raphael

La Fornarina print, also known as The Portrait of a Young Woman by Italian high renaissance artist, Raphael was painted between 1518 and 1519. It’s said that the woman was Raphael’s mistress, Margherita Luti, who often modelled for him, being the daughter of a baker, hence known as ‘Fornarina’ (baker). With no record of a commission for this nude portrait with her ‘venus-like’ pose, it is likely that Raphael painted La Fornarina print for himself. Raphael’s La Fornarina is currently housed in Rome at the National Gallery of Ancient Art in Barberini Palace.
