The Story Behind the Durer Self Portrait at Twenty Six Print
This 1498 oil painting is the second of 3 painted self-portraits by Albrecht Dürer, painted after his trip to Italy. He wears flamboyant clothes that represent the Italian fashion of the time. Despite his young age, Dürer had already established himself as a significant artist and his assured, almost arrogant, expression reflects this. The painting also marks the end of the youthful, adventurous period of his life and looks toward a more responsible phase of his life. Today, the original painting of this Durer self portrait print is displayed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
