The Story Behind the Durer Self Portrait at Twenty-Eight Print

The last of a Dürer’s self-portraits was painted in 1500, just before his 29th birthday and is the most personal and iconic of the three. Many have noted the similarity between the way Dürer depicts himself resembles the way Christ is represented in earlier religious art. The most notable similarities include the darker tones, the exaggerated symmetry and the way the subject looks directly at the viewer. Even the way his hand is raised draws a similarity to the act of blessing depicted in the religious works. Today, the original work of this Durer self portrait print is displayed in the Alte Pinakothek art museum in Munich.
