The Story Behind the Birth of the Milky Way Print by Rubens
This Birth of the Milky Way print shows the oil on canvas painting by the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens. Completed around 1637, it depicts the origin of the Milky Way according to Greco-Roman myth. In the painting, Hera/Juno spills her breast milk whilst nursing the infant Heracles/Hercules. Zeus/Jupiter can be seen in the background with his eagle and lightning bolts along with a carriage pulled by peacocks which were sacred to Greeks and Romans. Rubens modelled the face of Juno on his own wife Hélène Fourmnet. Originally commissioned by Philip IV of Spain, the original work of this Birth of the Milky Way print is now held at the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
