The Story Behind the Statue of David Print by Michelangelo
This photographic print of the Statue of David shows the marble masterpiece created by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. The sculpture of the Biblical King David, standing 5.17 metres or 17ft tall, is a Renaissance work of art and one of the most well-known sculptures of all time. The sculpture was commissioned to appear along the roofline of the Florence Cathedral alongside other statues depicting prophets but was placed outside the Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of the Florentine Civic Government. In 1873, the statue was moved to the Galleria dell ’Accademia in Florence and a replica was installed at the original location.
