The Story Behind the Sokokura Print by Hiroshige

This Japanese woodblock print, the Sokokura print was created in 1852 by Japanese master printmaker Ando Hiroshige and is part of the Seven Hot Springs of Hakone series. Hiroshige’s Sokokura print shows vibrant images while portraying a peaceful feeling of wooded valleys surrounding Hakone. Strongly influenced by the popular series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Hokusai, Hiroshige's work was more ambient than Hokusai's bolder, more formal prints.
