The Story Behind the Fine Wind, Clear Morning Print by Hokusai

Red Fuji is known by several names: ‘South Wind, Clear Sky’ and ‘Fine Wind, Clear Morning’.  It was created c. 1830-1832 by Hokusai, a Japanese artist and printmaker of the Edo period, who specialised in Ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese art. The Fine Wind, Clear Morning print is part of the series; Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, and this stunning woodblock print has been described as one of the simplest and at the same time one of the most outstanding of all Japanese prints. It depicts the symmetrical Mount Fuji on the right half but is beautifully balanced by gentle clouds to the left, making for a striking composition.
