The Story Behind Rubens The Three Graces Print
The original work of Rubens The Three Graces print was painted between 1630 and 1635. This oil on oak panel depicts the Graces (also known as the Charities), minor deities from Greek mythology. The Graces are the Goddess of pleasant charm, the Goddess of charitable deeds, and the Goddess of gratitude. The figure to the left resembles Rubens’ second wife Hélène Fourmnet. Rubens appears to have painted this for his own collection and it remained in his possession until his death, after which it was purchased by Philip IV of Spain. The work went to the Royal Alcazar of Madrid in 1666 and now hangs in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
