The Astronomer Print by Vermeer
Vermeer painted The Astronomer print in 1668, and the oil painting portrays a scholarly studio where an astronomer is plotting a course on a celestial globe, surrounded by scientific paraphernalia. Often associated with his Geographer, painted at the same time, The Astronomer print is recognised as one of the great Dutch masters of the seventeenth century. Scientific themes were common among painters at this time, with the study of the universe being important to the Dutch shipping trade. The original of The Astronomer print can currently be seen at the Louvre in Paris, France.
