The Story Behind the Salisbury Cathedral Print by John Constable
John Constable painted the Salisbury Cathedral print in 1830. While it was exhibited that year, with no buyer, the painting remained in Constable’s studio. He continued to retouch it until his death in 1837. This oil on canvas painting depicts Salisbury Cathedral from the northwest, looking across the River Nadder. It is considered by many to be one of Constable’s greatest pieces. John Constable painted the picture after the death of his wife, and it is said to reflect his emotions at the time. The original Salisbury Cathedral print by Constable is currently on display at the Tate Britain in London.
