The Story Behind the Abundance Print by Rubens

Painted around 1630, the Abundance print (Abundantia) by Peter Paul Rubens represents a personification of prosperity. Abundantia was a Roman goddess of abundance, prosperity and success. Romans believed that she would help protect their savings and investments and even help a person with major purchases. The painting shows Abundantia’s cornucopia overflowing with fruits while in Roman legend, this was usually filled with grain or coins. The original work of the Abundance print is currently held at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo.
